Careful of your Cookies

Legislation is now in place which means that all visitors to your website must be informed about any use of "cookies".

So what exactly are cookies? (Not the crumbly chocolate chip type that’s for sure!)

Many websites use "cookies" - small files to track a user’s activity on the site. There is often nothing untoward about this; it is a common mechanism used within online hotel booking systems for example. Google Analytics tracking (and most web statistics packages) also uses cookies in order to provide meaningful reports about your website visitors.

However, this legislation means that a website user must be informed about any use of cookies and have given their consent for such use.

All websites that Marketing Shropshire will have a message or a page informing users of cookie use as is now required.

If your website is hosted by another IT company we suggest you check whether your website uses Cookies, and if it does, make sure you are informing your users about this.

Here’s some more technical jargon about Cookies if you would like to know more...

An HTTP cookie - commonly referred to as just "cookie" - is a parcel of text sent back and forth between a web browser and the server it accesses. Its original purpose was to provide a state management mechanism between a web browser and a web server. Without a cookie (or a similar solution), a web server cannot distinguish between different users, or determine any relationship between sequential page visits made by the same user. For this reason, cookies are used to differentiate one user from another and to pass information from page to page during a single user's website session. A web server uses cookies to collect data about a given browser, along with the information requested and sent by the browser's operator (the visitor). Cookies do not identify people, but rather they are defined themselves by a combination of a computer, a user account, and a browser.

We're not trying to tell you how to live your life, but...

You're currently using a very outdated web browser, this can lead to problems viewing our website and the rest of the world wide web.

Many developers have now stopped supporting Internet Explorer 8, and although we do still support it, it's end is nigh...

We recommend upgrading to a much more powerful browser, such as Google Chrome or at least a newer version of Internet Explorer.

Feel free to close this window and continue browsing.
